Microsoft unveils branded Surface tablets

The rumor mill can finally take a break. Putting an end to the feverish speculation surrounding its mysterious Los Angeles press event, Microsoft revealed Monday that it has several branded tablets up its sleeve: Surface for Windows RT, and Surface for Windows 8 Pro.

The former features an ARM-based processor and is geared toward casual users, while the latter appeals to more demanding consumers with its third-generation Intel Core chip and full-fledged Windows 8 Pro operating system. Both Microsoft-made slates boast ultra-strong magnesium frames with integrated kickstands, and each trim is compatible with the company’s new Smart Cover-like Touch Cover, which, like its Apple inspiration, attaches to its host magnetically. Unlike the iPad’s cover, though, Microsoft’s Touch Cover can also sense users’ keystrokes, allowing them to “touch type significantly faster than with an on-screen keyboard.” Users who’d prefer a more traditional typing experience can opt for the company’s 5 mm-thin Type Cover, which sports moving keys.

Surface for Windows RT will debut alongside Windows 8 this fall. Surface for Windows 8 Pro, on the other hand, will hit shelves some 90 days later. Microsoft said its tablets will be priced “competitively,” but declined to elaborate.
