Apple vs PC Operating Systems: Which Is Best for You?

August 31, 2020

Like other infamous competitions, the Apple vs PC debate has raged for years, and will likely never end. Supporters on both sides claim that their OS is the best, and are eager to point out perceived faults in the other.

Yet when looking at the different aspects of each system, is there a clear winner? In which aspects do one OS climb ahead where the other falls behind?

If you’re debating between Apple or PC and are looking for a detailed comparison that’ll help you make that decision, keep reading.

Setup

When you first purchase a new computer, turning it on is an exciting moment. What pops up in those initial moments is the first impression you’ll have of your new computer and its OS.

With regards to setup, both iOS and Windows offer clean and polished experiences. Instructions are easy to follow, and both give you the chance to sign in to your Apple or Microsoft account. Although you don’t need to, you’ll miss out on many features if you don’t.

Logging In

Logging in is another experience that can give you a good or bad impression. Both Macs and PCs give you more modern options to sign in, as opposed to the traditional password.

If you have a new MacBook, it may have a Touch Bar. This lets you sign in with your finger. If you have an Apple Watch or iPhone nearby, you can also use those to sign in.

Yet Windows 10 uses Hello, which comes with more options than Apple. You can log in using your finger, a PIN, or your face. For some users, this may be more convenient.

Hardware Selection

Apple is unique in that it manufactures both its software and hardware. This means that all of their products have the same, high-end aesthetic and design.

Yet while Apple’s build quality is impressive, the number of options pale in comparison to those available to PC users. You can completely customize your computer’s CPU, video card, storage space, and any other aspect. Windows also supports more nontraditional options, such as VR headsets and the HoloLens.

Preinstalled Apps

When you first buy a computer, odds are, you won’t have many programs installed on it. That’s why those with more preinstalled programs are preferable.

Both Macs and PCs come with useful apps, such as ones for mail, maps, and weather. PCs come with some strange programs that most users don’t use, such as farming games and a link to connect an Xbox. On the other hand, Macs come with useful apps such as GarageBand, iTunes, and iMovie.

Both Apple and Windows often release updates that improve how apps function. Check out this guide on how to update operating system on Mac.

Search

When you need to find something quickly, you don’t want to have to search for it. That’s why a powerful search function is important.

Windows and Apple both do a good job at providing a search system. Windows displays their search bar all the time, and searching it in can also give you web-based results.

Macs use a similar system called Spotlight. Both let you see the weather, open apps, do math, and a variety of other tasks.

Apple Ecosystem vs Windows Ecosystem

Connecting your mobile device and tablet to your computer can be a selling point for many people. So which OS does mobile integration better?

Windows has been taking steps to improve its integration capabilities. If you have an iPhone or an Android, you can share documents and web pages. You can also open a web page from your phone on your computer.

Yet Apple still outshines Windows in this department. Photos and videos sync automatically, files can be shared with AirDrop, and FaceTime lets you video chat across different devices. As of now, Windows can’t beat the Apple ecosystem.

Cortana vs Siri

Virtual assistants have become more and more advanced in recent years. Windows ships with Cortana, while Apple has Siri.

Both have no problem opening web pages, searching for information, and setting reminders. However, Cortana comes with a few advantages.

As of now, Siri can’t shut down or log out of the computer. This is something that Cortana can do, and that is useful after a long and busy day of work.

Cortana can also give requests to Amazon’s Alexa.

Interface Flexibility

Some users prefer an OS that gives deep customization options. So who offers more flexibility, Apple or PC?

Both systems let you change screensavers, background images, and screen item sizes. They also let you choose between light and dark mode. Both also let you use multiple monitors.

Yet if you’re craving deeper customization capabilities, consider using another OS altogether, such as Linux.

Software Compatibility

Both Macs and PCs have large app stores full of different software options for you to use. Generally, Macs have better options for creative software, while PCs offer access to more business-related programs.

Both systems also do a good job of installing and then keeping apps updated. However, both iOS and Windows lack the attention that app developers give to mobile devices.

Apple vs PC? That Depends on You

Although there are hardcore fans on each side, deciding on Apple vs PC comes down to a matter of personal preference. But by using this guide and looking at the various features, you’ll be able to make an informed decision as to which OS is the better choice for you.

What do you think? What is the biggest difference between iOS and Windows Operating System?

In conclusion, choosing between Apple and PC operating systems ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. Each platform offers unique features and benefits that cater to different users. Whether you prioritize design, functionality, or gaming capabilities, it’s essential to evaluate your options carefully. As you make your decision, consider the question: is Mac good for gaming?
