How to Shoot with Anamorphic Lenses

March 4, 2019

An anamorphic lens is a specialty tool that is commonly used to project an image onto the sensor of a camera. It’s basically designed to fit wider aspect ratios in a regular film frame. However, cinematographers mostly take advantage of its unique feature which provides a glorious visual output that looks like a nucleus with tender movements and chromatic horizontal flares.

Using Anamorphic Lens in Shooting Photos and Films

Nowadays, enhancing your mobile filmmaking and photography process has become easier with anamorphic lenses. Below are some basic steps to help you shoot in a wider format using these unique lenses:

  • Use your anamorphic lens with ND filter and a filter mount. These tools are effective in limiting the shutter speed while giving you a clean motion blur through 180 degrees rule at 24 fps. If you don’t have these tools, you can find them in your local camera shop.
  • De-squeeze your film for a normal oval bokeh look. Since anamorphic lenses are used to create wider cinematic imagery, you need to de-squeeze it in order to achieve an oval shape without disfiguring the image. The frame is de-squeezed so that your footage will be stretched again in a flawless oval bokeh style.
  • Bring your anamorphic lenses in the streets. In order to improve your photos and films, you need to use your camera more. This will enhance your creativity while creating images that are worth the attention of your audience. Remember, practice makes perfect.
  • Take advantage of the flares. Admit it or not, anamorphic lenses are commonly used because of its beautiful horizontal flares. This unique effect gorgeously enhances the cinematic look every photographer and filmmaker dreamed of. To create wider bokeh flares, directly shoot via a center of light source.

The light source mainly helps in producing the perfect bokeh flares you wanted. It’s also about positioning and the approach you use when shooting images. In addition, you can achieve those magical flares with car headlights, flashlights, store signs, and even street lamps. That’s why a lot of videographers would look for stores that offer kowa anamorphic rental so that they can test it out and see how these type of lens give films a more cinematic effect.

Takeaway

Being creative when shooting photos and films doesn’t have a limit. In fact, you are free to use any resources and tools that will help you maximize your anamorphic lenses. The only challenge here is that, you will find it hard to use this type of lens in the beginning. But as you make progress, you’ll surely create cinematic flared snaps with buttery smooth look you’ve ever wanted.
